Live main: KOKOKO!
KOKOKO! is a collective that embodies the essence of creativity and cultural resistance. Hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo, KOKOKO! are pioneers of a sound revolution that has taken the world by storm, mixing electronic sounds and self-made instruments with a powerful political and social charge. Their sound, imbued with hypnotic rhythms and a loud and clear message, will resonate within the walls of the City of the Other Economy!
The KOKOKO! collective, born from the meeting between French producer Débruit (Xavier Thomas) and vocalist Makara Bianko in a bar in Kinshasa, has been revolutionising the Congolese music scene since 2017, thanks to a unique sound created with instruments self-made from recycled materials. Their debut ‘Fongola’ received wide acclaim, and with ‘BUTU’, the band veered towards more basic electronica, while retaining the overwhelming energy reminiscent of Kinshasa’s alternative parties.
During the pandemic, the band had to adapt, with Bianko and Thomas remaining the core members. Despite the changes, KOKOKO! has continued to promote a strong political and activist message, denouncing serious human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where repression of dissent and intercommunal violence are still rife.
