Stop racism, not the game
in collaboration with Lunaria
The universalist principle conveyed by the symbol of the Olympics reminds us that the principles of equality, solidarity and non-discrimination should allow all people to
practise sport freely and with peace of mind, in their chosen disciplines, facilities and at their chosen levels.
Discrimination in sport is evident in all sports disciplines and at all levels, even though public and media attention tends to focus mainly on incidents that involving elite football players and athletes. The commitment of sports institutions in prevention and combating the phenomenon is still inadequate.
It is not just a matter of timely sanctions, but of building a new sports culture based on the principles of participation, equal opportunities, solidarity and fair play.
Panel I
Is everything legitimate in sport? For a sports culture free from racism
‘Until not so many years ago, black footballers suffered in silence the dehumanisation they endured from the stands and on the field. This is no longer the case today. The sports authorities have the tools to act. Public attention, even internationally, is greater.
What is missing, however, is too often the culture to understand. Reducing everything to judicial practice does not help to make progress’. (Max Mauro, Il Manifesto, 28 March 2024)
